But if you want to have a say in what gets built in Santa Monica, you might want to check into the Land Use Voter Empowerment Initiative which is a ballot measure scheduled for voting in November. LUVE will make it more difficult for developers to construct new buildings taller than two stories or 32 feet. Under the measure, a developer wanting to build beyond those height restrictions, or beyond what the zoning codes allow, would have to get voter approval. Typically, these projects are approved by the city, usually the City Council.
