Why is it on the fourteenth day of February, couples are forced to show their love through gifts of poetry, flowers and candy?

Legend has it, during third century Rome, there was an emperor who decided that unmarried soldiers made better soldiers than those that were married, therefore decided to outlaw marriage. A priest named St. Valentine decided this wasn’t fair and chose to marry young couples secretly. When the emperor fund out, he sentenced St. Valentine to death, therefore we celebrate this day to honor his devotion (and ours) to love.

For all you guys out there, in order for us girls to feel appreciated, planning a special evening together for Valentine’s Day is a necessity. So unless you have the culinary skills of a top chef and time to spend in the kitchen all day, then you can’t go wrong with simply making a reservation.

Here is a list of 5 Santa Monica restaurants that are sure to set the mood:

1.) Cafe Delfini – Tucked away in Santa Monica Canyon, the restaurant has a cozy interior, reminiscent of a place you would find in a small villa in Italy. The food is classic family style Italian recipes utilizing uncomplicated flavors and great ingredients.

2) Il Ristorants di Georgio Baldi – Another great Italian restaurant in the Santa Monica Canyon, GB is known for its celebrity crowd, everyone from Tom Cruise to Tom Hanks has been known to dine here, so it must be the food that keeps them coming back for more. Because it is family managed, their passion for cooking is noticeable in the entrees and the service is always with a smile.

3) JiraRaffe – Chef and owner Raphael Lunetta specializes in California French Bistro and displays his expertise with a menu that frequently changes to incorporate fresh seasonal ingredients. The vibe is sophisticated yet not stuffy. There is a special four-course prix fixe menu available for Valentine’s Day.

4) Melisse – Owner/chef Josiah Citrin offers a culinary treat with this contemporary French Cuisine award winning restaurant. The chic ambiance, seasonal menu & world class wine list will not disappoint.

5) Michaels – A landmark in Santa Monica since 1979, the menu incorporates a modern American style of cooking based on a foundation of classical French cuisine. The outdoor garden patio makes for a perfect setting for a romantic dinner.

Because it is a popular night to go out, making reservations in advance is highly recommended unless the 5pm or 10pm seating will work for you. Guys get bonus points for flowers delivered that day with a note letting your special someone know how much you look forward to spending the evening with them. It’s really that simple, and your sweat heart will definitely appreciate the effort.
