Movie Review: Bridesmaids Delivers Laughs to Men and Women Thanks to Kristin Wiig

Ok, so I am writing this on a dare from my wife. She says I would be too embarrassed to admit that I liked Bridesmaids.

To be perfectly honest: she didn’t have to twist my arm too hard to see it last Saturday. The reason being, I think Kristen Wiig is super talented based just on what I see of her on Saturday Night Live each week.

Getting into the movie theater (it’s playing at both Santa Monica AMC theaters on the Third Street Promenade), to my surprise, I found that I wasn’t the only guy in the audience. (There may have been four of us, probably because women all over the country are telling their men, “Oh, c’mon honey, it’s the female version of The Hangover. It will be hysterical!”)

Well, The Hangover it aint. Over two hours, it is.

Having co-wrote the movie with Annie Mumolo, Wiig borrows characteristics from other characters that she has developed and used on SNL for years. Which isn’t a bad thing at all since most of her stuff is hilarious. And had they cut out all the cutesy, Hollywood ending, feel-good resolution garbage at the end, the movie would be better. Then again, that’s to be expected from a big summer comedy so I shouldn’t be too surprised.

Funny thing is that if you look online at all the trailers for the film, you won’t see many of those scenes in the movie. It seems they must have been tinkering with the edits until the very last moment. That said, it means that many of the funniest parts of the film aren’t ruined by just watching the commercials on TV.

Have you seen Bridesmaids yet? If so, what did you think?
