If you have young children, you can appreciate the importance of “date night.” A couple of months ago, my wife and I decided to have a babysitter every Saturday night, and it has truly changed our lives. We are big-time foodies and we enjoy taking advantage of our time together drinking wine and eating at our favorite restaurants. There a few great spots in Santa Monica that we love and I can recommend.
For us, it’s a combination of ambience, service and, of course, food that brings us back to a restaurant. When we are in the mood for a steak, BOA on Ocean Avenue has one of the best steaks in town. My favorite is the bone-in filet. It’s a real steakhouse experience with all the classic sides and of course the signature strong steakhouse cocktails. Ivy at the Shore, also located on Ocean Ave, is another one of our favorites. The food is fresh and consistent and my wife is addicted to the garlic shrimp dish. The service is spot on, and the famous gimlet drinks always ensure a good time.
If we want a more low key evening, a burger and a beer at Father’s Office on Montana always hits the spot. It’s a small pub and seating is limited, but it boasts one of the best burgers in the country. Don’t even think about telling them how you like it… they serve the burger only one way!
When we are in the mood for sushi, we venture out to Katsuya. It’s located in Brentwood on San Vicente, and always seems to be overflowing with LA’s most beautiful. The restaurant was designed by Philippe Starck and has striking photos of lips and tattoos that hang on the walls and give an edgy hip feel to the dining room. The food is outstanding and includes delicious robata (Japanese charcoal grill) items as well as a creative sushi menu. The signature dish is spicy tuna on crispy rice. Katsuya is also in flow with the latest mixologist (fancy bartender) trend serving drinks like the Burning Mandarin- a spicy and sweet cocktail served in a martini glass with sugar on the rim and a slice of jalapeño floating on top. If you really want to enjoy yourself, be prepared to fork out some cash, but it’s the price you pay for a fun extravagant night out!
What are some of your favorite date night spots in Santa Monica? I’m always looking for new places to go.
