The future of the Santa Monica’s skyline has caused quite a controversy among Santa Monica residents. A city that has not had much commercial development in the past, now has over 30 projects in the works, adding 3 million square feet in new residential, office and retail space according to the LA Times. This includes the controversial Fairmont hotel development creating quite a stir among residents North of Wilshire and the owner of the Huntley hotel, mostly due to the proposed 320 foot building. With all this new hotel development the city hopes to gain worldwide recognition, thus, more travelers. The increased tourism will create new tax revenue that will benefit social and public services.
All this development started with the new Expo Line project which is expected to be finished by 2016; with the goal being less traffic, most developers are building within walking distance. It has been a little over a year since the Culver City stop opened with a slow start, the number of riders are now starting to increase, a hopeful sign for Santa Monica, since so much is happening around this project.
Residents are divided – some are in favor of a more urban city and others want to preserve the beach community they grew up in. How are you feeling about the changes?
