Two new listings this week North of Montana Ave and one home re-listed brings the total number of available homes to 15. The demand for houses that will deliver around $3 million remains exceedingly high. Almost every day I get calls and emails from agents and brokers searching for properties located North of Montana Ave and priced in the low to mid $3 million’s. The Santa Monica Mirror reported yesterday that a man was arrested for stealing approximately $200,000 of jewelry from a property in the 1100 block of San Vicente. The property owners say they hired two men to help them move. The men were referred to them by a friend. Once they noticed the jewelry missing the owners contacted the movers who said if they did happen to have the items, there would be a charge for returning the loot. The owners called the police and an arrest has been made.
This is not the first time I’ve heard of movers ripping people off. Be smart about who you hire and probably handle your jewelry personally – long after the movers have moved on.
Here are some practical tips to keep your possessions safe…
1) Change the locks if you have not done so since purchasing your home or you believe your key has gotten into the wrong hands.
2) Know your neighbors (neighborhood watch programs are very effective).
3) Consider motion detector lighting for outdoor lights in dark areas.
4) Keep your windows and doors locked.
5) Avoid posting on social media that you are leaving town.
6) Have someone check on your house while you are away.
7) Invest in a home security system and use it.
8) Be sure to install interior door hinges.
9) If you see anything suspicious, report it immediately.
