As you can imagine, I have been in thousands of houses over the years and have seen the damage the year’s first rain can bring, even in sunny Southern California – where it “never rains”.
Too many times I’ve seen leaky roofs and over flowing rain gutters causing damage that could have been prevented with a little preparedness. A lot can happen in ten months of dry weather that goes unnoticed until it is too late.
A few helpful hints on how to prepare your home for winter weather: First clean all leaves, branches and debris from the rain gutters and drains. Turn off the automated sprinkler systems on rainy days. Drain the pool a little bit, to a lower level to avoid any overflow.
Protect against wind damage by securing items in the yard. Be sure there are no exposed electrical wires. Finally, make sure all windows and doors close and seal properly.
