The Big Short Santa Monica Dirt

I got to see an early screening of the “The Big Short” last week. Great movie, but I doubt it will go over well with the masses. It’s strange seeing these particular actors playing these roles. Although all of my clients and colleagues and even a few of my friends will understand the subject matter, in my opinion, the complexity of the subject matter will probably prove too much for most.

The Big Short is based on Michael Lewis’ book “The Big Short: Inside the Doomsday Machine” and dramatizes the true story of the early days of the housing and financial industry meltdown.

I found the fourth-wall-breaking moments weird but necessary and the cameos were a strange and unwelcome surprise but I still recommend the movie.

Long before the meltdown one of the most successful mortgage brokers on the Westside tried to warn me about the house of cards that was building in the mortgage business and I, like many, thought he was being over the top with his predictions. It turned out of course that he was not at all exaggerating.

Luckily Santa Monica was among the last areas to crash, we fell much less, and recovered much more quickly and robustly than most other cities.

If you’re not bummed out enough after The Big Short – give 99 Homes a try. Easier to follow but way more depressing to watch.

1401 Georgina Avenue  – went into escrow quickly.  5 bedrooms, 6 baths, listed for $3,995,000.  Large, elevated corner lot at 14th and Georgina. An end-user is said to be the buyer. Last sold in September 1998 by Pence Hathorn Silver for $1,500,000.

364 21st Street –  4 bedrooms + 3 baths.  $3,250,000.  This was probably sold before it even hit the MLS. Triple A prime location but certainly will be difficult to obtain a demo permit.
