Ticket to Ride

Santa Monica PD has been on a tear lately on Montana Ave. The motorcycle cop hides at 14th and is mostly on the lookout for drivers not yielding to pedestrian.  Now more than ever, they are looking out for bikers too. In the last three years, this city has had 874 accidents that resulted in injuries or even death for motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

Starting today, Friday, May 29th, and continuing on June 1st, 3rd, and 5th, the police will be stepping up their crack down on violations committed by drivers. In particular, they will be on the lookout for drivers who speed, fail to stop at stop signs and red lights, do not stop for people in crosswalks, or make illegal turns.

From my window to the world at 14th and Montana I see way more bikers and pedestrians ignore traffic controls than auto drivers do and SMPD claims to be after them too – giving tickets to pedestrians they catch jaywalking.

This isn’t the first effort that has been made to reduce the number of car accidents involving pedestrians and bicyclists. The city as a whole has been working hard to slow down traffic and make sure crosswalks and bike lanes are available and properly used. But these efforts haven’t made a difference so far, which is why the police are stepping it up.

Have you been to Forma yet?

Soft launch was last week. This is where 17th St Café was. I went last night and predict they will give R&D Kitchen a serious run for their money. The room is beautiful, the staff incredible, the menu varied, the food delicious and the service was top notch. The beer and wine list is really interesting. Finally we have some options away from R&D!

Get there early or don’t get in!
